■ INSide PC-FX-ALL about V810TM

§0. Preface

For everyone reading this, you know that the NEC V810 is used as the CPU for the PC-FX, right? Here's I'll talk about the V810 and V series and the basics of IC. Also I plan to talk about assembly and make some sample programs, etc.

なお、V810 Data Sheetis the simplest and only data, so those interested in FX dev should give it a look and note that it's the 3rd edition.

§1. General Introduction to V810

Well there's no introduction to the v810 on NEC's page.

NEC Microcomputer's 32 bit RISC V series.. there's the v810 v810 core v810 family v850 core v850 family based on that, v810 modified (for multimedia etc) v830 core v830 family.

V810 Roadmap★is here

[figure1-1]V810 roadmap selection guide from 1996.10)

the v810 family isn't really being sold and only the v821 appears on the page.

The V series features: small, low-voltage operation, low power consumption, low price.
It can be used for PDAs such as NEC's windows ce model etc. (note I'm skipping most unimportant crap).

used for faxes, word processing etc. lots of uses for this one-chip computer with high cost performance. well yeah theres also the v850.

It shares some characteristics with hitachi's SH series, MIPS R series (3x,4x), ARM series.
Those chips are used in saturn, n64, blahblah.

The NEC VR series was MIPS.

§2. Structure of V810

Btw, "V810" is the nickname with the real name being "μPD70732". This isabout the name you can see the MOS digital IC.What exactly is it?

IC's are separated into semiconductor IC's and hybrid IC's based on structure. Semiconductor IC's can be broken into binary(?) IC's made with transistors and MOS type made with MOSFET.

MOS is Metal Oxide Semiconductor, then it talks about oxidization process and such

MOSFET(Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor) very fast switching bipolar transistor, blah.

Current flows the PN junction, a bipolar transistor with P (positive) and N (negative), called the bipolar transistor. First of all, the basic function of a transistor is to perform amplification and switching of the current, and generally calling it a "transistor", a bipolar model transistor is distinguished from FET (Field-Effect Transistor) or IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor).

It goes on to talk about P-only transistors.

More talk about MOSFET, gates, this is really useless isn't it.

MOSFET is more narrow and dense but good mfg can negate that, blah.
impedence is high, blah.

This part I really didn't care about.

With that said, the V810 is the MOS type. I'm getting hungry for a MOS Burger.

§3. Shapes of V810

The V810 package consists of 120 pin plastic QFP、120 pin plastic TQFP、176 pin ceramic PGA x3。PC-FX has use of the 120 pin QFP.(reference

120ピンQFP

[figure3-1]120 pin plastic QFP(Quad Flat Package)

QFP is intel's chipset's FX、VX package i've heard. btw, TQFP is Tiny Quad Flat Package、PGA is Pin Grid Array.

Order information

μPD70732R-25176 pin ceramic PGA (seam weld)25

The v810 can run at 3 speed of 16,20,25 mhz but 16+20 are just for QFP. the pcfx v810 clock seems to be the 25mhz one.

For naming, then we have package codes. GD is QFP, GC is TQFP, R is PGA.LBB and 9EV are pin forms.

The one used in the pc-fx is referred to asμPD70732GD-25-LBB.
